From the Principals

Greetings Families!

Welcome to Summit Pointe Elementary 2012! Happy New Year! We hope the holiday break was a wonderful time with family and friends.  Now we are all adjusting to the morning alarm clock and re-establishing routines at home and at school.

As we begin second semester, I hope each family is able to reflect on first semester’s progress. Throughout the Panther Post you will see numerous student accomplishments!

The winter season is a wonderful time to cuddle up with your child and read. Add a special touch while reading together. Consider a cup of hot chocolate or hot cider. These experiences, over time, become a tradition and will be passed on through your own child.  We have included a recipe for you try with your family.

Recipe suggestion from the office staff:

Hot Spiced Cider

Ingredients

¼ cup packed brown sugar

½ teaspoon whole allspice

1 teaspoon whole cloves

1 cinnamon stick

1 pinch ground nutmeg

1 large orange, sliced

2 quarts apple cider

Directions: There are a number of options to make this recipe. One option is to place all ingredients in a crock-pot and let them simmer most of the day.  A quick method is to place a filter in coffee basket, and fill with brown sugar, allspice, cloves, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and orange slices. Pour apple cider into coffee pot where what usually goes.  Brew and serve hot.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Summit Pointe Elementary. We are lucky to have such a wonderful school community!

Sincerely,

Dr. Heather Kenney, Principal

Dr. Marcia Sutton, Asst-Principal

Music News

Happy New Year to all SPE families from the music room.  We will be busy again with January with learning how to read music.

Our kindergarten and first grade classrooms will focus on the differences between loud, soft, high, low, fast and slow.  Our activities will include learning simple musical notation through winter activities using snowmen and penguins.  Instrument families will be a focus as well.

Our second graders will be learning about solfedge sol, mi, and la and staff placement for these pitches.  They will also learn about quarter note values, double 8th note values, and single 8th note values.

Our third graders will be learning about the instrument families and how sound is produced.  They will also add to their knowledge of counting to 16 notes and work toward pitch recognition of treble clef middle C to fourth space C.

Our fourth graders will focus on how many sounds to each beat.  We will begin reading and performing more complex rhythm patterns.  Extension of pitch recognition in the treble clef will include middle C to above the staff G.  We will review learned concepts of syncopation, major verses minor key, ostinato, accelerando and ritardando.  We will add “Ti” to our solfedge hand signs.

Our fifth and sixth graders will be working with the smart board to learn more concepts about music such as minor key, enharmonics, Latin musical terms, and pitch intervals.

LIBRARY

December was a busy month in the SPE library. We had students decorating our Mitten Tree with mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves which were donated to Lee’s Summit Social Services. By December 16, you could hardly see the tree because of all the donations. Thank you for your generosity!

As we move into the 3rd quarter, the Missouri Readers Club continues to grow. So far, we have had five students complete the challenge with many more getting very close to completion! Keep reading, Panthers in Grades 4, 5 and 6!

Lots of other library lessons are scheduled for January. We’ll be learning more about the Dewey Decimal Classification system, fiction and nonfiction books, how to find the important information when we’re reading and how to do research on topics from A to Z! Plus, we will continue to enjoy stories from the Show Me Readers nominee list and the KC3 Readers nominee list.

Remember, when it’s cold and shivery outside, it’s a great time to snuggle up with a great book!

READING

MCj04158960000[1]Celebrate Reading in the New Year!

Dear Summit Pointe Families,

Use the following tips to help guide your discussions at home as you enjoy quality literature together! These activities support the reading and thinking strategies that the students are practicing daily at school.

·        Read the books aloud to your child.

·        Listen to your child read the books aloud to you.

·        Read the books with your child by alternating paragraphs or pages.

  • Share your background knowledge on the subject to help give your child a better understanding of the historical events that took place at the time(s) of these stories. (Schema/Making Connections)

  • Encourage your child to make connections between the story and experiences, feelings, and people in his/her own life.  Share your connections, as well. (Schema/Making Connections)

  • After reading the book, or portions of the book, draw pictures together to represent your family’s understanding of the story. (Sensory Images/Visualizing)

  • Ask your child to make predictions about what might happen next in the story. (Inferring)

  • As you read the stories, discuss how your child’s opinions, understandings, and predictions change throughout. (Synthesizing and Monitoring for Meaning/Metacognition)

Lee's Summit R-7 inclement
weather closings update

Inclement weather may result in closing, delayed opening or early dismissal of school. If the weather is threatening and there is a possibility of school closings, please tune into any major local radio or television station and listen or watch for "Lee's Summit R-7 School District."

In addition to the notice through the media, the R-7 School District sends a recorded phone call to all students' families and all employees. Known as SchoolMessenger, the service has the capability to send a recorded telephone message to all families within minutes. This service is used for school closings as well as other communication. If severe weather necessitates that students be sent home early during the school day, these emergency calls would go to up to six phone numbers per student, including home, cell phones and parents' work numbers. If a snow day is called the evening before or during the early morning, this emergency call will go only to students' home phone numbers as well as to all R-7 employees' home numbers. In the case of families with multiple children in the R-7 School District, SchoolMessenger will call the family just one time.

Families may also learn about snow days through the district's electronic newsletter. All subscribers to R-7 News Update receive e-mail notice of all cancellations, early dismissals and late starts. To subscribe to this electronic newsletter, go to http://lists.leesummit.k12.mo.us/mailman/listinfo/r7news.

School cancellation notices are also placed on the R-7 School District's Facebook page (search for "Lee's Summit R-7 School District" to become a fan of the page) and on the R-7 School District Telephone Information Line. The District Information Line is (816) 986-1001. Please note that school closing information will not appear on the R-7 website.

All days lost due to inclement weather will be made up at the end of the school year, beginning on the first non-holiday weekday after the last day of school.
